President’s Message

Camille OFSHEEA

Dear OFSHEEA Members:

Our Annual General Meeting occurred On October 24, 2020.  It was our first virtual AGM in 117 years as an association.  This historical meeting was an eventful one.  At the meeting, we elected a new slate of officers (new President, Vice President, Treasurer, and the Central East, Central West, and Toronto Regional Representatives).  We also debated and passed several resolutions which refined OFSHEEA’s purpose, updated our slate of officers, changed our parliamentary rules of procedure, and allowed for videoconferences which guide how we conduct meetings.

The Board of Directors believed the passed resolutions make the association more relevant to the times, and will engage and better serve our members.  With the change from Robert’s Rules written in 1860 to Democratic Rules of Order (DRO) written in 1999, we believe that more people will freely participate as DRO has easy rules that all can learn.  DRO still however has formal motion processes that make them suitable for official Annual General Meetings.  Also by putting electronic voting and meetings in our bylaws we have the ability to get more things accomplished in a timely fashion to better serve our members.

This past summer we updated our website to make it more attractive, modern, and user-friendly.  In the coming months, we endeavour to add to the professional development of our members by hosting more virtual seminars, workshops, panel discussions and other events.  Also, over the next 2 years we will be doing some strategic planning to examine OFSHEEA’s mandate, vision, and the member services we provide.  Our ambition is to better serve you so you get value for your membership fee.  In this project, we will reach out to the membership for feedback (e.g., surveys, short interviews) to assist us in 2021.  Any feedback that you could give would be appreciated.

As always we will continue serving our members and support your needs as a family studies educator.  We thank you for your membership and support.  If you, or if you have colleagues who may be interested in joining OFSHEEA, please do not hesitate to contact us.  Also we are always here to assist you and answer your questions.

Warmest regards,

Camille Naranjit, President
