Recipe Reading Guide provided by Lauren Stitt, Corporate Sponsorship Director
As I prepared my students for food labs last year, I wasn’t able to find a comprehensive guide for reading recipes. I have designed this resource for use in HIF and HFN however, it certainly could be applied to HFC or HFA.
Burlington High School Family Studies Teacher Receives Recognition Award – Congratulations Jody!
Milton, Ontario (September 14, 2015) Halton Family Studies teacher, Jody Triano, has been named the 2015 winner of the Ontario Agri-Food Education Inc. (OAFE) Teacher Recognition Award. Each year OAFE recognizes an Ontario teacher that creatively integrates agricultural concepts and information into classroom curriculum using learning activities that increase student understanding of the importance of the agricultural industry and the impact on personal lives, the environment and the economy.
Ms. Triano teaches Grade 10 Food and Nutrition and Grade 12 Food and Health courses at Nelson High School, Burlington and is being recognized for her passion and enthusiasm for helping students gain a better understanding of where their food comes from, how it’s grown and prepared, as well as the many consumer concerns surrounding food production and healthy eating.
Students in Triano’s Grade 10 program were involved in growing, harvesting and preparing their own food. Vegetable seeds such as tomatoes, lettuce, zucchini, peas, beans, beets and carrots, were planted by the students in the school greenhouse and later transplanted into the school’s outdoor raised garden beds built by students in the woodworking program. The produce harvested over the summer is used by a local church that provides healthy meals to people in need. Students volunteer to help with the preparation of these meals as a way of giving back to the community.
The Grade 12 program takes a closer look at current agricultural topics and issues as part of the local and global food issues unit. Each student selects a topic of interest such as GMOs, organic foods, marketing food to children, or fish farming, and work at developing their research and presentation skills by conducting primary and secondary research, designing and implementing a survey, and reporting their findings to their peers. These same students also work together in small teams on the Dinner Party Wars project which focuses on eating patterns and trends. This project is met with much enthusiasm as each team prepares a meal for another team based on a special diet such as Raw, Gluten Free, Local, Lactose Free, Probiotics, or Vegan.
The OFSHEEA Board of Directors would like to congratulate Jody Triano on her award!
