Toronto Star article: Why fashion makes us look foolish in photos

WHAT IS IT AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

This is an article you can use in your fashion courses to open up discussion about fashion cycles, fashion history or the evolving roles of males and females in the media. Also, any other lessons in family studies courses that relate to body image, digital media, or modern day standards of beauty in the media may also find this article a good lesson hook.

To emphasize the point on how fashion leaves its mark on us, I would ask students to bring in past pictures of themselves the day before I began my lesson. Most likely, I would lead with this article and then follow up with the students providing examples of changing fashion trends by using their own photos. Students would then have the opportunity to apply their knowledge by providing the commentary and context of their photos as they relate it to our lesson.
